Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955) born into poverty during the Reconstruction South, she became a member of FDR’s “Black Cabinet;” advised four presidents; catapulted into a Civil Rights leader, and founded the all girls Bethune-Cookman University. See also: her on-campus home and resting place.
